Campo Grande
My only picture of Campo Grande. What it shows is that we are dealing with a modern nation that is in many respects not so different from our own. Got there in the evening, the needed to get something to eat and ended up here at this great mall. Upstairs (left side of picture) is a huge and varied food court. It was Saturday evening, and stores were closed but eateries were open and tons of people wandering around. There was a Subway that, just before I made my order, ran out of bread. After more running around, figuring that somewhere there would be a mini-mart open. I was wrong, however, there was a Subway close to the hostel and they did have bread. The next time I cam in (after I returned from the Eco Farm), the kids were lining up to proudly practice their English on me. Lots of fun. Unexpectedly, like so much on this journey, Campo Grande turned out to be a fairly large and modern town. I think the fact that it was a military town and the HQ of their western defense region with several bases, army and air force, brought a lot of money to the town and made it what it is today. The hostel was excellent and after arriving there, the young man at the desk showed me pictures of the Eco Ranch, and said that what I was looking for would be there and not here in C.G. So, they checked me out the next morning, with a reservation for my return the following evening, and my departure after that. I realize, time was of the essence, and with that in mind, once again I was amazed how much I managed to get accomplished in those few hours. CG was a sudden change and instead of going to Recife, I decided to stop here and see a little of the Pantanal. Couldn't be happier, but would have loved to stay on the Eco Farm for at least one other day, for the boat ride. |
